Abstract

Limited, non-renewable and negative ecological impact of conventional energy sources turned our thinking toward the renewable energy resources (sunlight, water flows, wind, tides, geothermal heat, biofuels) in order to maintain economic development and the quality of life of people at a high level, while meeting the increased demands on environmental safety of production and consumption. The green economy is designed to find a balance between the economy, social policy and the environment. Based on the survey of Russian experts on sustainable development conducted by the authors of this article, it was determined that bioenergy, based on the use of biofuels from various organic substances (including wood waste), has the greatest impact on such elements of the green economy as ‘renewable energy sources’ and ‘waste management’. Moreover, bioenergy can become a driver for the development of the national economy, since Russia ranks first in the world in terms of forest resources, and such sectors of the economy as forestry, woodworking, and pulp and paper industry have a great potential for growth and development. At the same time, the issue of recycling of low-grade (low-quality, non-commodity) logs and wood waste is still not fully solved: in practice, it is buried or burned. Processing of non-marketable materials, wastewood, slash, felling residues, buried wood is an advanced way to solve both energy and environmental and economic problems. The article is devoted to the study of the current conditions in Russia and promising opportunities for using wooden biomass as one of the most effective renewable energy source.
