FUNCTIONAL FEATURES OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF BORDER TERRITORIES
Abstract
The study of the functional profile of border regions is a topic that has been addressed in many scientific publications. This paper provides an overview of the works of various authors who have described a wide range of properties and functions that are characteristic of these regions. Based on a thorough analysis of the authors' concepts regarding the selection of functions for border regions, a classification of the main functions that are associated with these regions has been developed. By systematizing the views of scholars on the factors that determine the development of border regions, we have identified a list of the most significant factors in our opinion. The paper provides an overview of domestic researchers who confirm that cross-border cooperation is a key determinant of regional development. Special attention is paid to the main advantages of developing cross-border territories. Various researchers agree that the realization of the potential of the borderlands contributes to the formation of unique competitive advantages for these regions. This study aims to explore the architecture and configuration of functional features, factors, key advantages, and limitations that influence the development of territorial borderland regions. The following tasks were consistently solved to achieve this goal: the range of characteristics and functional features of border territories was determined; an overview of the author's approaches to selecting the functions of border economic regions was conducted; a classification of the key functions implemented in border territories was developed; adjacent factors were identified; a systematic list of the most significant factors for the development of border territories was presented; strategic factors for the development of border economic regions were identified in terms of their relevance and compliance with existing development strategies; and the main advantages and limitations inherent in the development of economic regions were identified. The methodology is based on a systematic approach, which allows us to consider border territories as a complex system that is transformed under the influence of functional features, factors, and the main advantages and limitations of border territories' development. This approach is based on the integration of general scientific, theoretical, and empirical research methods. This work makes a significant contribution to understanding the theoretical and methodological aspects of the development of border territories. Its practical significance lies in the possibility of using the obtained data by public administration bodies to form targeted programs, as well as by scientific and educational organizations. The conducted research opens up new horizons for future scientific projects, including a detailed study of the functional features, systematization of the most important factors, and analysis of the advantages and limitations inherent in border regions.
